SLRs with point-and-shoot personalities
January 06, 2009
SAN FRANCISCO - The impression that digital SLR (single-lens reflex) cameras are too complicated to use is quickly fading. So, too, is the notion that they lack some of the friendly features found on point-and-shoot cameras. While digital SLRs probably won't replace pocket cameras anytime soon, more users are looking to step up their photography by graduating to a digital SLR.

Digital photography gifts
December 10, 2008
SAN FRANCISCO - I love this time of year. The weather turns brisk, a dusting of snow settles on the trees, and holiday music fills the air. The only downside? Shopper's anxiety: I never know quite what to buy for my friends and family. So that must mean it's time for my annual holiday shopping guide. If you want to see the goodies I recommended last year, check out 2007's "Digital Photo Shopping Guide," part one and part two.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1 Digital Camera
December 10, 2008
SAN FRANCISCO - For some people, the biggest obstacles to buying a digital SLR camera are the bulk and weight--who wants to carry a couple pounds of camera around everywhere? The Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1 may provide a solution: It's smaller and lighter than any digital SLR, and it has features that will make point-and-shoot users feel comfortable. But it's expensive compared with low-end SLRs, and in my hands-on tests it didn't produce the same image quality as true SLRs do.

Winterizing Your Camera
November 27, 2008
SAN FRANCISCO - There are very few cameras designed from the ground up to work in harsh winter conditions. The Olympus Stylus 1050 SW, for example, is winterized to perform at temperatures as low as 14 degrees Fahrenheit. It's even more rugged than most digital SLRs--my own Nikon D200, for example, is rated to work down to freezing, no colder.

Five Rules for Better Panoramas
November 13, 2008
SAN FRANCISCO - Panoramas--images that combine a series of photos into a sweeping vista larger or wider than what you could capture in a single photograph--are among the most exciting and unexpected benefits of digital photography.

Casio Exilim EX-Z150 point-and-shoot camera
November 13, 2008
In my own tests, photos yielded good exposure much of the time. My shots exhibited good color and sharpness under outdoor lighting. The 28mm wide-angle lens was a definite plus; I enjoyed being able to take wider-than-usual wide-angle shots, though the image quality was somewhat lower when I zoomed in to 3X or 4X, the camera's maximum optical zoom level.

Pentax Optio S12 digital camera
October 16, 2008
SAN FRANCISCO - What do you get when you cram 12 megapixels and great battery life into a very tiny, very durable, and sublimely easy-to-use camera? You get the Pentax Optio S12, a solid competitor for the upper echelons of our Top 10 Point-and-Shoot Cameras chart. The Optio S12 is a cinch to use, fits comfortably into just about any pocket and looks as stylish as its predecessor, the Optio S10. Though it lacks some key functions (optical image stabilization in particular, but also zoom in video mode, and advanced manual capabilities), the camera earns points with its ease of use.

What to do with your summer pics
September 25, 2008
SAN FRANCISCO- As Labor Day arrives, the really good part of summer departs. And when it leaves, it leaves you with a camera and camcorder stuffed with memories. Sure, you may get as far as dropping those memories into iPhoto and iMovie, but what then?
