SAN FRANCISCO - Are you bored with beautiful games? Alright, okay, I know -- just because they're pretty doesn't mean they're empty-headed. But you've gotta admit, after all these years, and for all the passionate chatter about gaming "growing up," there's still a kind of funky-smelling obsession out there about the way tomorrow's games are supposed to look...as if they weren't games at all.

SAN FRANCISCO - To hear Ken Levine cite Ultima Underworld as the game that inspired him makes me smile. I miss the Ultima series, the Underworld games most of all. I even miss the "World of Ultima" spinoffs. Remember Savage Empire? Martian Dreams? I do.

For many of you, that means exhilarating weeks and sleepless nights, missed classes and late homework, "sick" days from work, stacks of pizza boxes, soda-can mountains, and telling your spouse you'll be down to dinner in "just a few more minutes!" while remaining inert in your desk chair until supper's just a collection of refrigerated tupperware containers.

SAN FRANCISCO - Sony's new re-brushed and buffed-up PlayStation Portable 3000 handheld video game system should finally be dangling from plastic retail hooks or resting in neat little rectangle stacks on shelves as you read this, but should existing PSP owners think about upgrading? The PSP 3000 is basically a point update to the PSP "Slim and Lite," Sony's lighter, faster, slimmer refresh that arrived in September 2007. Recall that the original PSP debuted in March 2005, so we certainly weren't due for an update this soon, but an update we're getting, and one that includes a brighter, faster LCD display, expanded video-out, and a built-in microphone.

Gears of War 2 controls inspired by Uncharted

SAN FRANCISCO- Even though Cliff Bleszinski "can't stand" the cover system of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, the outspoken game designer borrowed heavily from the PS3 game when refining the upcoming Gears of War 2 for Xbox 360.
