As much as it wants to green the whole information and communication technology (ICT) industry, “we really can’t cover everything as much as we want to,” admits Ian dela Rosa, enterprise business development manager of APC-MGE by Schneider Electric. But what it can do to help make environment friendly, it does with flair – and that’s on the greening of data centers, which Dela Rosa says needs to be given special attention, especially since “globally, there is a pressure to cut (energy) consumption, what with data centers (still) one of the biggest consumers of organizations all over, with the typical set-ups (accounting for) 40$ to over 50% of total consumption.”
This is why APC-MGE by Schneider Electric has “established a reputation over the years as (the source of) the industry’s most comprehensive product and solution range for critical ICT and process applications in industrial, enterprise, small and medium business, and home environments.” And it does so while keeping an eye on being green.
APC-MGE by Schneider Electric’s solutions include uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), precision cooling units and racks, and design and management software, among others- all making available “the industry’s most comprehensive integrated power, cooling, and management solution.”
In a prepared statement, Laurent Vernerey, APC-MGE president and CEO, says that companies have a "social responsibility to develop green data centers." “We believe our portfolio represents the best options to achieve the mandate of the efficient enterprise. With world-class components, close-coupled cooling designs, high density containment options, and new power and cooling capacity management software, we are uniquely positioned to solve the data center issues of today and tomorrow,” Vernerey says.
Responding to the prediction that the cost of powering and cooling data centers will soon surpass the cost of the equipment housed in them, APC-MGE by Schneider Electric’s solutions are numerous.
On the one hand, “we have already carved a presence in (multinational corporations or MNCs),” Dela Rosa says. In fact, because of the continuous support of its existing clienteles, for 2006 alone, APC-MGE by Schneider Electric’s 112,000 employees in operation in 190 countries earned $18 billion. This is because, if before “telecommunication connection was the major challenge, now (that is a given, and the major requirement) is powering equipment. When discussing power to address efficiency, however, we do not only (deal with) power, but also with cooling. And here, (we) deliver,” Dela Rosa says.
On the other hand, however, the company recognizes that business requirements vary, especially since not all companies have MNC budgets; or, even if they did, are unwilling to spend on something already acquired, even if a model is less effective. Thus, specifically for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), it has “world-class products and services at a reasonable cost, with APC-MGE’s solutions as good as it gets in terms of value and quality.” “Let’s not discount the fact that SMEs today are the next business giants of tomorrow. In fact, a lot of the large corporations today came from small businesses. And as they grow, we can provide them solutions that will maintain them to meet their business needs,” Dela Rosa says.
Then there, too, are retrofit solutions to allow “companies to get only the solutions that they need. This way you make use o fwhat you already hav e(with us helping ensure you complete) the migration path so what you have now will still be usable in the future,” he adds.
No matter the client size, however, APC-MGE by Schneider Electric looks at the “4C’s of the efficient enterprise – right-sized best-in-class components, close-coupled cooling, containing the heat, and capacity management, APC-MGE integrates power, cooling and management components to minimize waste and maximize scalability.” “This right-sized ‘pay-as-you-grow’ approach is a tangible manifestation of our commitment to improve energy efficiency in data centers around the world, be it SMEs to the largest corporations,” Dela Rosa says.
Dela Rosa believes that companies need to look beyond upfront costs when going green. “It’s what scares many to go green; but (aside from going green becoming mandatory, the) long-term benefits are also bigger, so companies really should start looking into this.”
APC-MGE recently received the 2007 Global Data Center Solutions Company of the Year Award from global growth consulting company Frost & Sullivan, which honored the company’s unparalleled excellence in the data center solutions market by addressing the most fundamental and evolving needs of customers.
